Celebrating Time

One of my son’s obsessions is the calendar. For years, Ezra has greeted the first day of every month by rising at dawn and dashing through the house, shouting, “It’s February first!” or “It’s the first day of October!”  With pure joy, he exults in the simple passage of time, the ordinary act of turning a page on the calendar.

So let me begin in the style Ezra taught me:

It’s the first day of the blog! It’s Blog, Day 1!

I’m thrilled to welcome you to the website and blog for my new book, FOLLOWING EZRA: What One Father Learned About Gumby, Otters, Autism, and Love from His Extraordinary Son. The book will hit bookstores – real and virtual — on Sept. 6. It’s already available for pre-order at Amazon and elsewhere. (And yes, you can also order it as an e-book.)

I wrote FOLLOWING EZRA because so many books about children with autism did not reflect my experience. They tended focus on one kind of narrative: a battle against a disease. Instead, I wanted to capture – with humor and tenderness – the wondrous, textured, and surprising life you get to experience in raising a unique child.

More on that later. For now, let’s just celebrate the moment the way our house celebrates every thirty days or so:

It’s the first day of the blog!

Congratulations Tom on what is surely a superb book about a wonderful father and son.
We cannot wait to begin reading your book, continue following your writing and also continue following Ezra.
